Email templates and patterns: use, save and manage them

Templates and patterns save you from rebuilding the same design for every email. A template is a complete email design you start from. A pattern is a reusable group of blocks, such as a header or a footer, that you drop into any email.

Templates, patterns and the template library are included in the free MailerPress plugin. The ready-made templates marked Premium and the Sync Templates button require MailerPress Pro.

Types of templates

  • Basic starters: Default template, Register for an event, Sell a product and Tell a story. They are offered next to a blank email when you start a campaign from scratch.
  • MailerPress Pro templates: ready-made newsletter, e-commerce and welcome designs, marked Premium in the lists.
  • Your templates: the designs you save yourself. Each one has a category and a type: Newsletter for campaigns you send yourself, or Automation for automation emails.

Start an email from a template

When you create a campaign

In MailerPress > New Campaign, choose the Visual Editor, fill in the campaign information, then pick your starting point: Start from scratch (blank email or basic starters), Template (MailerPress Pro templates and your templates) or Previous Campaign. See Create an Email Campaign for all the steps.

From the Templates screen

  1. Go to MailerPress > Templates.
  2. Select a template to preview it. Use the desktop and mobile buttons to check both layouts.
  3. Click Start with this template.
  4. Enter the Campaign name (only visible in your dashboard) and the Campaign subject, then click Start composing email.

From the editor

In the email editor, open the Settings menu (three dots) and choose Browse all templates, or press Ctrl+Shift+B (Cmd+Shift+B on Mac). Select a template, then click Use this template and confirm: the template replaces the current content of your email. The change is saved only when you save the email. In an automation email, the library shows your automation templates.

Manage templates in MailerPress > Templates

The Templates screen lists your newsletter templates on the left and previews the selected one on the right.

  • Filter the list with the All, Premium and Your templates tabs, search by name, and sort by Name, Created at or Updated at.
  • Open More template actions (three dots next to Start with this template) to Edit template details: Template Name, Category and Template Type (Newsletter or Automation).
  • For your own templates, the same menu also offers Edit template content (opens it in the editor) and Remove.
  • With MailerPress Pro, Sync Templates imports the MailerPress Pro templates again, for example if some are missing from the list.

Save your own templates

Save an existing email as a template

  1. Open the email in the editor.
  2. Open the Settings menu (three dots) and choose Save as template, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Cmd+Shift+S on Mac).
  3. In the Add new template window, enter a Name and choose a Category (or type a new name to create one).
  4. Click Add.

A template saved from an automation email gets the Automation type; any other email gets the Newsletter type.

Create a template from scratch

  1. Go to MailerPress > Templates and click Create Template.
  2. Enter a Template name and a Category, then click Create template.
  3. Design the template in the editor and click Save.

You can also turn an MJML design into a template: see How to Import an MJML Template into MailerPress. To move a design to another site, use Export email as JSON and Import email from JSON in the editor Settings menu.

Reuse blocks with patterns

Patterns are listed in the Patterns tab of the editorโ€™s left sidebar, grouped by category, with a separate Footer patterns category. Search them, then drag a pattern into the canvas. Each pattern is inserted as an independent copy: editing it in one email does not change the pattern or other emails.

In a category, the Pattern options filter shows All patterns, only those from MailerPress & Plugins, or only those created by a User on your site. For categories you created, the same menu offers Rename category.

Create a pattern

  1. In the editor, open List view.
  2. Open the options menu of the section or wrapper you want to reuse and choose Create pattern.
  3. In the Add Pattern window, enter a Name, choose or type a Category, and click Add.

To delete one of your patterns, click its delete icon in the list. This cannot be undone, but emails that already use the pattern keep their content.
