Every marketing email must let recipients opt out easily. MailerPress handles this in three ways:
- a one-click unsubscribe option that compatible inboxes show next to your sender name;
- a default footer that always keeps an unsubscribe or manage subscription link in your campaigns;
- a Subscription links block that adds these links anywhere in your email.
One-click unsubscribe and the Subscription links block are included in MailerPress since version 2.1.0. Replacing the default footer with your own requires MailerPress Pro.
One-click unsubscribe from the inbox
MailerPress adds standard unsubscribe information (hidden email headers) to the campaigns, automation emails (since MailerPress 2.1.2) and re-engagement emails it sends. Inboxes that support it can show an unsubscribe option outside the email content. There is nothing to configure.
- When the recipient uses this option in their inbox, the contact is unsubscribed right away, without a confirmation page. Its status becomes Unsubscribed.
- If the same unsubscribe address is opened in a browser, MailerPress redirects to your unsubscribe page, where the contact confirms the request.
Unsubscribes made from the inbox update the contact but are not linked to a campaign, so they donโt count in the Unsubscribes figure of a campaignโs statistics.
The default footer
New campaigns include a default footer with Unsubscribe and Manage subscription links, unless your starting template already contains one of these links. The links use the %UNSUB_LINK% and %MANAGE_SUB_LINK% merge tags, which MailerPress replaces with each recipientโs personal links. They lead to the pages set in MailerPress > Settings > General. See Manage MailerPress Subscription and Unsubscribe Pages.
You can edit the footer text, but the footer itself is protected:
- Without MailerPress Pro, the default footer stays locked: you canโt remove or move it.
- The footer must keep at least one block. MailerPress stops you from removing its last block.
- While the footer is locked, the list view (the outline of your emailโs blocks) shows a lock icon on it.
Replace the default footer with your own (MailerPress Pro)
With MailerPress Pro, the default footer unlocks as soon as your email contains a visible unsubscribe or manage subscription link elsewhere, for example in a Subscription links block or in a text link that uses one of the merge tags above. You can then delete the default footer and design your own.
If you remove or hide that other link, the default footer locks again. Trying to delete it then shows: โThe email footer can only be removed after you add an Unsubscribe or Manage Subscription link elsewhere in the email.โ
Fix a missing link
If a campaign has no unsubscribe or manage subscription link, the editor shows the notice โAdd an Unsubscribe or Manage Subscription link to comply with GDPR.โ (GDPR is the European data protection law.) Click Fix it: MailerPress adds the links back to the footer, or adds the default footer if it is missing.
Add links with the Subscription links block
The Subscription links block inserts unsubscribe and manage subscription links without typing merge tags. Use it to build a custom footer or to place the links at the top of your email.
- In the email editor, open the block inserter and search for Subscription links (โunsubscribeโ, โfooterโ or โGDPRโ also find it).
- Drag the block where you want it. By default, it shows โUnsubscribe | Manage subscriptionโ, centered.
- Select the block and adjust it in the Links panel of the settings sidebar.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Show unsubscribe link | Displays the unsubscribe link. |
| Unsubscribe label | The text of the unsubscribe link. |
| Show manage subscription link | Displays the link to the page where contacts choose their lists. |
| Manage subscription label | The text of the manage subscription link. |
At least one link must stay visible, so you canโt turn off both. The Dimension, Typography and Color panels set the blockโs padding, alignment, font and colors.
What recipients see
- The Unsubscribe link opens a confirmation screen, then the unsubscribed screen.
- The Manage subscription link opens the preferences page, where the contact chooses the lists to keep.
- In the public web version of a campaign (opened from its public link), these personal links are hidden.
To change the look of these screens with MailerPress Pro, see Design the Manage Subscription and Unsubscribed Pages in MailerPress.
