Send your campaigns with Mailgun in MailerPress

This feature requires MailerPress Pro.

Send your campaigns through Mailgun and track bounces (emails that canโ€™t be delivered) in MailerPress.

Prepare your Mailgun account

  1. Create a Mailgun account or sign in.
  2. Add your sending domain (for example mg.example.com), then add the DNS records Mailgun gives you (SPF, DKIMโ€ฆ) at your domain provider. These short entries prove you own the domain. Wait until Mailgun shows it as verified.
  3. Note the domainโ€™s region (the Mailgun data center hosting it): US or EU. MailerPress must use the same one.
  4. In your Mailgun API security settings, create an API key (a secret code that lets MailerPress send through your account) and copy it.

Connect MailerPress to Mailgun

  1. Go to MailerPress > Integrations, Email Service Providers tab.
  2. On the Mailgun card, click Configure.
  3. Fill in the fields below and click Save changes. The button stays disabled until Mailgun API Key and Sending Domain are filled in.
  4. On the Mailgun card, now under Configured Providers, turn on the Enable toggle, then click Set as primary provider.
FieldWhat to enter
Mailgun API KeyYour Mailgun API key.
Webhook Signing KeyOptional. Secures bounce tracking (see below).
RegionUS (default) or EU, as in your Mailgun account. A wrong region can cause โ€œdomain not foundโ€ errors.
Sending DomainYour verified Mailgun domain, exactly as shown in Mailgun (e.g. mg.example.com).
Default sender email addressAn address on your sending domain (e.g. [email protected]).
Default sender nameThe From name used by default.

Send a test email

  1. On the Mailgun card, open the three-dot Actions menu and click Send test email.
  2. Enter a recipient in Send to and click Send. The test emailโ€™s subject is โ€œThis is a Sending Method Testโ€.

If the test fails, MailerPress shows the Mailgun error:

  • 401: the API key is invalid or missing.
  • 403: the API key lacks the needed permissions, or the domain isnโ€™t authorized.
  • 404: the domain isnโ€™t found. Check the Sending Domain and the Region.

A Mailgun sandbox domain (a test domain Mailgun creates for you) only delivers to authorized recipients: authorize your test address in Mailgun, or use your own verified domain.

Set the sending speed

Go to MailerPress > Settings > Sending frequency (or click Adjust sending frequency on the card) and choose a profile that matches your Mailgun plan:

ProfileSettingsEmails per hour
Balanced (Recommended)75 emails every 5 minutes, 15 emails/second900
Performance (Foundation+ plans)200 emails every 3 minutes, 40 emails/second4,000
High Performance (Scale plans)300 emails every 5 minutes, 50 emails/second3,600

For the other modes, see How to change your sending frequency in MailerPress.

Enable bounce tracking

Mailgun reports bounces through a webhook: an address on your site that Mailgun notifies automatically.

  1. Reopen the Mailgun settings in MailerPress and turn on Enable bounce tracking.
  2. Click Copy to copy the Webhook URL:, which looks like https://example.com/wp-json/mailerpress/v1/esp/bounce/mailgun.
  3. In Mailgun, open the webhook settings of your sending domain and add a webhook for the Permanent failure event with this URL.
  4. On the same Mailgun page, copy the Webhook Signing Key. Paste it into the Webhook Signing Key field in MailerPress and click Save changes.

With this key, MailerPress rejects any notification that doesnโ€™t come from Mailgun. Leave the Webhook signing secret: field of the bounce tracking panel empty: Mailgun uses the Webhook Signing Key field instead. Without a signing key, MailerPress only applies a bounce if it sent an email to that address through Mailgun in the last 30 days.

Mailgun uses the same event type for temporary and permanent failures, and MailerPress marks the contact as bounced in both cases. Subscribe only to Permanent failure so a full mailbox or a temporary error doesnโ€™t remove a valid contact.

Keep the Mailgun card enabled: MailerPress refuses bounce notifications from a service that is neither enabled nor primary.

Find bounced contacts

Go to MailerPress > Audience > All Contacts and click the Bounced tab. Bounced contacts no longer receive your campaigns.
